Those Guys: Endgame

Last week Sunday, my husband and I got out for a much-needed date morning (yeah, this is our life now) to see Avengers: Endgame. Somehow we had high hopes that we would be able to see the most anticipated movie of the year, which persons would have booked tickets for weeks and dare I say, months in advance, by just showing up mere minutes before the start time on its opening weekend.

That was really, really optimistic.

But in our defence, who would have thought anyone would show up early to see the 9:00am showing of the movie on a Sunday? Turns out, A LOT of people.

Remembering Those Guys

With cinemas booked up until the middle of the week (are people skipping work for this movie?), our Endgame that morning was to get a nice breakfast and just enjoy each other’s company a bit. Meh. (Just kidding babe, your company was lovely). 😉

We remembered that one of our friends previously recommended Those Guys diner to us and it wasn’t very far from where we were, so we decided to check it out.

Those Guys diner is an American-styled diner on the corner of Fitt Street and Ariapita Avenue that serves breakfast all day. When they say all day, they mean all day – they are open 24/7.

First Impression

First of all, it is so important not to judge a book by its cover. When we got there, it didn’t quite look like what I expected (also, I didn’t realise I had an expectation until I got there). Let’s just say, I don’t know if I would have noticed it if I wasn’t actively looking but then again, it was just after 9:00am on a Sunday morning. I bet the sign looks more prominent at night.

When hunger strikes

The friendly male server seated us by the window and gave us the menu.  I was so excited since just the day before I was telling my husband I wanted to go out and have a big breakfast. But I think maybe we went a bit overboard. The funny thing was that our server didn’t even walk with a notepad and pen when he came to take our order. It was just two of us, how much could we really eat? Either that or he had some mnemonic system to remember orders. I think it was more the first assumption because the look on his face when we started calling out our order was like “oh no, I made a mistake.”😧

We ordered:

  • An omelette with mushrooms, cheese and chicken (I know, I know, I felt maybe it was a bit morbid to put chicken in the omelette but they didn’t have turkey so for my breakfast, both the chicken and the egg came first.)
  • A tuna panini
  • Hash browns
  • Cinnamon waffles (which come in 2)
  • Chocolate-chip pancakes (a stack of 3)
  • Pineapple-passionfruit juice
  • Chai Tea

We have healthy appetites, people. But also, when you dine at new places, you are never quite sure about portion sizes so we like to err on the greedy side. Nom nom nom. 🤤

But when you see that your table has no more room to fit your order, then you think maybe you ordered a bit too much. One of the female servers took over and had a bit of a struggle to fit everything on our table. I then looked around at the larger parties who still had plenty of room on their tables and felt a twinge that we might be judged, but my hungry tummy quickly pushed that aside. Okay, so maybe I was sort of relieved that the male server forgot to put the hash browns on our order (poor guy) since I didn’t realise that the omelette came with a few slices of toast, but other than that, we regret nothing. 🙃

Everything was delicious! From the chai tea to my husband’s tuna panini which I had a bite of, I definitely did my usual happy dance when I am enjoying my food.

I also had to chuckle and point out to my husband that the male server was walking with notepad and paper to every table after he took our order. We traumatised him clearly.

Blogging Photo Fail

I only decided to write this post when we finished our breakfast and was leaving, which was a complete blogger fail since I missed the opportunity to photo-document our visit. 😣

Thankfully their Facebook and Instagram pages have lots of photos for you to see.

I was able to still capture a few photos of myself upon our departure though so in case you were doubting me, I gots some proof!

Other noteworthy moments during our visit

I quite like that we were seated by the window overlooking Ariapita Avenue because I weirdly love the look of the busy yet still calm street. What was unexpected was the man who calmly crossed the street in his shorts, a towel draped around his neck, and a toothbrush in his mouth. He disappeared from our sight for a few minutes then we saw him calmly traipsing back across the road, leaving us with many unanswered questions. Where did he go? Was there a standpipe nearby? Is the short pants and towel look in this season?

The arrow is pointing to the area where we saw the guy in shorts and towel!

Our seat was also close to the diner bar where another couple sat having their breakfast on the bar stools. Pretty normal…until the girl almost falls off her stool. We both react, so much so that my husband is almost half off his own chair thinking that something was seriously wrong. Nope, just a clumsy moment. I have had like a gazillion of those, so I was just happy it wasn’t me. The awkwardness soon follows when you wonder if you should just pretend like you didn’t see, you should ask if she was okay, or you should make a joke about how gravity can be such a jerk sometimes. It ended up being the first.

Final judgement

All that being said, I had a wonderful time that morning. It was great food, great company and a great moment when the resident klutz was not me.

My final thoughts on TGD? Simple – a clean and comfortable environment, the food was delish, great portion sizes, affordable prices, friendly staff.

Basically, these guys give a thumbs-up👍 to Those Guys!

Note: Those Guys Diner is currently closed for renovations but they should be back up and running on 1st July 2019. Can’t wait to see what they do to improve!
